Field of Dreams approach to life

As mentioned on the home page, any Sports Replay fan who starts a replay of their favourite sport with their favourite teams and players is building their own field of dreams. This page shows just a few of such Fields. But what exactly is the field of dreams, apart from a movie starring Kevin Costner that came out in 1989? The field of dreams is basically a state of mind.

Costner's character Ray is a poor farmer who hears a voice telling him "If you build it, he will come" and sees a ghostly baseball diamond in his field of maize. Despite the opposition from more practically-minded folk, he builds the field and finally attracts the baseball fans he'd been assured would come. Though some might think he takes a massive risk, the way he sees it, it's like partypoker - you have to take a risk in order to build your field of dreams.

As well as starring Kevin Costner and Amy Madigan as Ray and Annie Kinsella, The Field of Dreams also stars Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe Jackson, James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster in his second to last film role. The story is taken from the book Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella. The Philadelphia Inquirer said the book is "not so much about baseball as it's about dreams, magic, life, and what is quintessentially American."

The author, W.P. Kinsella, is actually Canadian, although he was born to American parents. The main point however is that baseball or any sport is pretty much universal. The idea of following your dreams and then others sharing your enthusiasm is one that is shared by all the world's great dreamers. As John Lasseter, the director of Toy Story said, Steve Jobs used to advise him that film makers should make the films they want to make, not what they think others will like, and if they do this their films will be much more popular as a result.

The field of dreams approach applies to pretty much everything from baseball to Sports Replays to Pixar movies.
