THE Table-Top Tennis Tournament Simulation !

This simulation I believe is the BEST to allow realistic Tournament Play and indeed Season Play in a reasonable time scale, while still giving ALL the features that come in to effect during ATP / WTA Tennis seasons. You can play Singles or Doubles, Seasons, Tournaments, on-off matches. World Team Tennis, Davis Cup, Federation Cup, or Hopman Cup matches or Tournaments or any other Contests you wish. And for recent seasons where data is available you can use the Surface specific ratings. There have been various Tennis simulations programmed for the Computer but with this exciting Table Top simulation you are actually involved and not just watching a computer autoplay, or repeatedly clicking buttons without any game involvement yourself.

With the ability to also rate players yourself (provided) you can complete a replay of EVERY Men's and Women's Professional Tournament ever played if you choose to do so !!

Ratings have been updated, components upgraded, and new rules added to take account of purple patch form improvements, form slumps and various other in game events including injury. In addition if data is available the season ratings are now supplied with overall and surface specific ratings.

Rankings for men's and women's singles are used to Rate all players with one of 25 Rating Cards being indicated for the individual players match performance.

Sample of part of a grading card

These Rating Cards convert a two-dice roll into a Performance Figure for each set and also incorporate tie-breaker Ratings and Ratings to use when the tie-break is level, or when the final set needs to be played out to a two-game advantage finish.

The two players' Performance Figures are compared and this usually results in a set win for one of them or failing that the start of the tie-break procedure which is also usually resolved with one additional roll for each player. Thus a set can take between 20 seconds - or less if you are able to convert two pairs of dice roll, made together, into the Performance Figures in less time - and about a minute.

We have added an additional dice roll for each player at the start of a tournament to determine fitness and current form and this can affect the Rating Card used in either a positive or negative way. And there is also an 'in-match' event possibility but this is triggered from the normal Performance rolls so no added playing time is involved unless and until an injury occurs. If you wish to play straight replays from the regularly updated rating sets these rules can be easily ignored.

To play your own total season with form and ranking changes we provide current and ATG Player Ratings and if you adjust these Rankings as the result of your tournament results - and we suggest how this might be done - you need to re-calculate the Ratings after every change in the Rankings. But even if this occurs after every tournament the re-calculation is very easily and quickly achieved.

An additional feature we have been able to build in is the ability to play not one set at a time but single games, possibly for those who want more than just a set score for, say, semi-finals and finals. With the advantage of service having a different impact on men's and women's tennis we have had to construct two separate charts. But in both cases the original Performance Figures are used, taken from the Rating Cards which of course reflect the players' respective current Rankings. So whichever play method you use - sets or games - the results should be consistent. These charts produce a game score if you require that detail but obviously the playing time is longer, a normal set taking about 3 to 4 minutes.

Our new version of the simulation has a new Instant Match Result option, to allow you to have match results for numerous First Round matches in Tournaments, for example, those you MAY not want to play in more detail. The results will remain loyal to the games main ratings, and utilise set stats I have located, to bring realistic results for each of these matches.

So you will be able to play a set by set match, a game by game match, OR an instant match with the same game. Three games in one !

Grand Slam Tennis is the ONLY Tennis game where it is possible for you to re-play matches and seasons from any season in the history of Tennis  - game by game, set by set, or instant result, single and doubles !!

All recent sets contain the top 100 players rated, along with rules as to how you can rate ANY lower ranked players yourselves as needed. We do not include hundreds of ratings as its unlikely you will ever want to play matches between the 514th and 831st ranked players for example....BUT you can within the game system ! (For older sets there will be less players included due to data available which you can see detailed in the add-on content opposite)

We have considered doing a computer version of this game, but having tried three computerised replay Tennis Games in the past I have found them to be nothing more than a click - click exercise and no personality or feel of Tennis to the game at all. So GRAND SLAM TENNIS is and will proudly remain a Table Top Game where you do get the feel of the matches unfolding in front of you. ( You can create your own excel helpers for it if you wish and share here for other Tennis gamers)

Grand Slam Tennis comes complete with the latest full years top 100 ranked men, The top 100 ranked women (ranked by surface), over 70 All-Time-Great men and over 45 All-Time-Great women plus the top 2013 doubles player ratings

GAME REVIEW BY BRIEN MARTIN

of Hot Stove Games

The latest game to capture my limited gaming attention is the updated and revised Grand Slam Tennis, by John Gardiner (originally designed by Terry Goodchild of Lambourne Games).

I'm not a huge fan of quick-play games because I lose the immersion factor of watching events unfold. Classic Golf is one of the exceptions because you do get the "feel" of an ever-changing leaderboard without the shot-by-shot monotony that can permeate golf games (and, yes, I'm including my own design).

Grand Slam Tennis is actually three games in one, varying in speed from super-quick to quick to nice-and-slow :)

In the "Instant" game, one dice roll, using a chart that compares the players' differences in rating, determines who won, and how (3-0, 3-1, 3-2, etc). Other charts allow you to "fill in" the details (which sets were won, and by what game score), if you so choose.
The instant method allows you to play tournaments in rather quick fashion, and I could see this method being the preferred method for the opening few rounds of a tournament before moving on to ...
The "Quick" game, which assigns each player a "grade card" depending on their current ranking on the world tennis rankings (top 100). The dice are rolled and each card is consulted for its result. Player A may receive a result of 5, and Player B may receive a result of 2. The game rules then "adjust" any winning result that isn't 6 to the proper score based on the final margin.
In the example above, A defeated B, 5-2 ... this converts to a 6-3 set win. Therefore, the results phase merely determines the margin of victory. Any 1-game margin is treated as a 7-5 set result. Any tied result is 6-6, and sends the game to each player's tie-breaker column on their card.
Here's one of the beauty parts of the tie-breaker ... if the tie-breaker margin isn't two points, you go to a "decider" column ... and every player has the same decider column ... this is where the huge upsets can happen as the game comes down to luck at this point; the player upon whom good fortune smiles will win the set.
I can see the quick game being used to resolve round-of-16, quarter-final, and semi-final matches before heading into ..................
The "long" game, in which each game is played out. In the long game, the same results from the quick play game are in play, but instead of them being compared, they are used to find the intersection on the matrix (one for men, one for women) to determine the game result. The greater the difference, and whether the server or receiver wins the duel, the better the level of win.

Everything you would expect in a tennis match is there in the long game ... the ebb and flow of the match, the service breaks that change the tides of fate, the drama of thrilling comebacks, the agony of 6-0 losses.

Other charts allow for pre-tournament and in-match injuries or events to affect the grade cards used, or the results from the player cards, to allow that stunning upset when #100 beats a completely off-form #1.
But be warned ... because even the short game plays quickly ... Grand Slam Tennis is potentially addictive ... John's got all of the excitement of professional tennis wrapped up in a neat little bow. Additionally, he tells you how to convert player rankings to player grade cards, so if you don't mind doing the research, you can rate every player, on every surface, from any season you have data for.
John does issue updated player "sets" (sheets with the current world rankings by surface) end-of-season, as well as historical sets, so you can stay up-to-date as much (or as little) as you desire.
Grand Slam Tennis is a great game, one I whole-heartedly recommend to anyone who likes the sport, and wants to enjoy watching a match or tournament play itself out on the tabletop.

GRAND SLAM TENNIS RATINGS

Apart from the initial set ratings and the guideline grading system included within the set, I can offer on request DETAILED RATING updates during the year available direct by e-mail and indeed can even cover ratings for specific tournaments or competitions if you so request. (I have access to 2 large computer databases of Tennis information updated daily, plus my own Tennis Library. My Tennis library includes all World of Tennis Annuals, all Wimbledon Championships Annuals, all ATP and WTA Media Guides from the late 1980's, many ITF Yearbooks, Grand Slam Record Books - Men and Women, Davis Cup, Fed Cup and Olympics History books, the Womens Tennis Ultimate Guide, Bud Collins Tennis publications, numerous Encyclopedias and Historical reference Publications, the Concise History of Tennis, plus Player Biographies)

Past Years Season set ratings are available right back to the early 1900's (and  I can go even further back if any interest !! ) and will be regularly added to. These are supplied direct by e-mail after your order, within 24 hours but usually much sooner. Where data is available these will include ALL SURFACE SPECIFIC RATINGS as well as overall ratings and events played

The regular season updates will include OVERALL and ALL SURFACE SPECIFIC rating lists if you wish to use them instead of the overall ratings included which in themselves work excellently as feed back confirms.

REMEMBER, you will not have to wait for ANNUAL updates to play matches with the current players with GRAND SLAM TENNIS!!

The first Sportsreplays set release was the Australian Open 2012 Edition including updated ratings as at January 30th 2012. There has already been a number of mid year updates and a 2012 year end set, and a mid 2013 set, the latest one is always included within a full game purchase.

Just some of the many feedback comments posted on the game :

"I have run one WTA tournament and the results were very good.  Tiebreakers are fun and they do add some excitement the way John has handled them. Excellent game that doesn't take too long and has provided me with another enjoyable tennis game to play" Stuart

"I settled for Grand Slam Tennis which has the option of playing game by game or set by set as well as the instant result. It has arrived and the game by game option is excellent, being relatively quick playing and appears to be reasonably accurate. As someone else mentioned the tie break system is very good" JB

"I am very impressed with the presentation and the actual components. It is also nice knowing that the player ratings are fairly up-to-date -  "WP

"I think that with the awesome game you have, you will make many people (like myself) who get nostalgic about those classic matches from yesteryear very happy" W

"This is a very good simulation. I give it two enthusiastic thumbs up. ......with Grand Slam you can play current players now plus Grand Slam has quicker play options for the big tourneys" RT
